Artistic Blinds

Library 1882 (open blinds)

Library Daytime

Library Nighttime

Prototype

Artistic blinds were created in the summer of 2015. The Fredricksburg Memorial Library is located in the heart of downtown Fredricksburg, TX. I visited this library several times for research (who does that anymore), but also enjoyed just walking the grounds to take pictures or people watch. Day or night, this really is a beatiful site, but I'm a sucker for old recycled buildings. I used DASS Supersauce to do the image transfers onto the faux blinds. It seemed appropriate to show the library images for both day and night. When you raise the blinds, or open them there is an image behind the blinds of the library's first picture in 1882. It took special permission from the library to access this picture from their archives.

The idea proved to be very popular, but the protype I built was just that... a protoype. This particular process would never be feasible for the home. The image transfer tend to cause the blinds to bow a little, not mention adding weight. Then there is the issue of longevity. It would not take long for the sun to fade or bleach the image transfered.

After much thought and several experiments, I believe I have found the appropriate medium. Laser engraving. I have done a number of samples with the laser engraver at one of our other campuses. This definitly appears to be a viable option. Now all I need is a laser engraver. The one I have been using to create samples has been down all year. I guess I'll continue the waiting game. Updates coming soon.
